My Journey to Santiago de Compostela Part XXIX

Sarria is known to be the place where most modern-day pilgrims start their journey.  There are 115 kms and it can be comfortably done in five days.  So as soon as we left Sarria, we were accompanied by far many more pilgrims than before.  Tens turned into hundreds!  And most carried no backpacks because they used the carrier service to take their bags from town to town.  It only cost 8 Euros anyway so who wants to carry a backpack? Me for example…

We left Sarria under the rain shortly before 9:00 am.  The journey was quite different in that it was always through fields and forests.  We must have crossed more than fifteen little villages which names it is very difficult to remember.  It was probably the most beautiful part of the Camino.  By 4:00 pm, we had reached Portomarin.  The entrance was quite tricky with a difficult descent that required great care to avoid falling down.  But once we were on the final 500 meters, it was an asphalt road and a very long bridge to cross the river Miño and enter the town.

This shack on the way from Sarria to Santiago looks like the one in the movie "The Way" with Martin Sheen, where the Pilgrims and Martin spent the night
