My Journey to Santiago de Compostela Part XXVI

Asun, Guru and I left Ponferrada at 6:26 am and it was a cold morning with 6 degrees C.  Around 10:00 am, we had reached the 200 Kms milestone (meaning we only had 200 kms left to reach Santiago) and we celebrated with some Irish Whiskey.  Soon after we were crossing the vineyards where the wine from the Bierzo region is produced.  My left ankle was swollen and hurting.  I stopped to buy an ankle brace and some unguent to address the swelling.  Guru gave me some anti-inflammatory pills which helped quite a bit to appease the pain.

It was another long day and it was great to have company and not noticing how far we were going.  We stopped for lunch at Villafranca del Bierzo and Asun and Guru stayed there to spend the night.  I had not been able to get a reservation there so I kept going to the next town.  Finally I reached Trabadelo, my stop for the night and I was lucky the hostel had a swimming pool to dip my feet in cold water.

Then I just wanted to have a quick dinner at a nearby cafeteria and crash, which is what I did!

The legend says that a French Pilgrim brought with him the Cabernet Franc vine to the Bierzo Region in his backpack. The vine then adapted to the soil and climate and became the autochthonous Mencia variety
