My Journey to Santiago de Compostela Part XIX

We left Sahagún at 6:30 am in order to go all the way to Puente Villarente, a small town almost 44 kms away.  That would allow us to have a much shorter walk the next day and arrive in Leon around noon so we could enjoy our time there.  The weather was very nice as usual and the topography was mostly flat.  But it was the longest distance I had walked so far on the Camino.

It was still dark when I left the hostel to go and meet Nadine and Antje at their place.  We witnessed one of the most beautiful sunrises as we strolled our way to the next towns.  We went through Calzada del Coto, Bercianos del Real Camino, El Burgo Ranero, then Mansilla de las Mulas, where the famous Puerta o Castillo de Santiago is located.  By 4:00 pm we had arrived at Puente Villarente, a small town of 220 inhabitants, where we stayed at Albergue Privado El Delfin Verde.

As a result of three days of record distance walks, I experienced my first blister on the right foot.  It was the size of a dollar coin!  I had to use my sewing kit to make a “remedio casero” (house remedy) to resolve it.  But at last, we were happy to have accomplished such a great milestone and spend the night only 13 kms from Leon, the next large city we would go through the next day.
